Ethiopia

Ethiopia is an impossibly diverse country, rich in culture and wildlife beyond imagination. Home to the famous 'Simien Lions', the golden gelada baboons of the northern Simien Mountains, and to a myriad of other endemic species, Ethiopia also harbours deeply spiritual and historical places, in the likes of Lalibela, Axum and Gheratta. Thousands of years of history literally carved into the rocks meet incredible landscapes, places where breathtaking mountain ranges seem to fall endlessly off the horizon. In the south, the fascinating tribes of the Omo Valley will have you question everything you've ever known. But there is more. The enchanting and mysterious Danakil Depression is home to pure, raw, beauty. From Erte Ale, the world's lowest standing active volcano, to sulphur lakes of turquoise and topaz colours, to endless salt flats, you will certainly feel as if you will have been transported to another world.

A few of our favourite places in Ethiopia...

Simien Mountains

Mystical Mountains of Ethiopia

Few mountain ranges on the planet are as more noteworthy than the Simien Mountains. Noteworthy, yet largely unknown to the world. A place where high peaks of 4550m fall hundreds of meters down into a single drop towards the lower lands to the north. A place where the mind is free to wander limitlessly, into the horizon. Scenically, few places rival the marvel that are the Simien mountains. Groves of Saint John’s wort lend the highlands their fairytale appearance, and upon the mountain peaks, rocks, and often snow, create an otherworldly experience. Not to mention the endemic wildlife that inhabits this mystical place. Troops of hundreds of gelada baboons frequent the cliffs, forests and grasslands of the mountains. At ease with the presence of humans, the geladas make for fascinating encounter: you can easily mingle with the family, observing them as they examine you. And upon the higher peaks dwell the magnificent yet highly endangered Walia ibex, that have also become habituated to humans, though reaching them is a trickier, adrenaline-filled task.

Danakil Depression

Stretch the mind as far as it can see

It is hard to believe that one can so quickly descend from some of Africa’s highest and most beautiful mountain ranges down to one of the world’s lowest places: the hauntingly beautiful Danakil depression. A vast and flat expanse of salt desert, stretching across hundreds of kilometres, born from the shifting of tectonic plates that separated a place once connected to the ocean. It took millennia for the water to evaporate, leaving in its wake one of the world’s largest salt flats…but there is more. Unique geological formations have resulted from this process, and one can visit the famous sulphur lakes that rebel against the white salt flats and sulphur lakes in tones of brilliant blue, turquoise and golden yellow. The Danakil depression is also home to one of the most active volcanoes in the world: Erta Ale, which sits in a continuous dance of red and orange lava and fire. As one explores these unique and picturesque landscapes, one will often bump into the nomad camel caravans that quest the flats to mine the salt for trading with the rest of Africa. Stretching for up to hundreds of metres long, these lines of fascinating people can emerge from the mirage-like desert ghosts. Drive the vast expanse or hike to the volcano, Erta Ale, and you’ll be in for an adventure like no other.

Lalibela

History Written in the Rocks

Few towns hold as much historical significance as the northern Christian cities of Ethiopia. Arguably, none of them more than Lalibela. A fascinating history is written in some of the oldest Christian scrolls ever uncovered, equally – and famously- inscribed in the rocks. Lalibela is known for its eleven rock churches, carved downwards into the rock by hand to make them less visible to invading Muslim armies. Some as old as 800 years! Wondering about these deep and dark chasms will certainly challenge your mind as your fingers travel over every chip in the rock. It is said that it took 24 years for some 22 000 people to complete the construction of these beautiful churches. A visit to Lalibela is an intellectual and spiritual experience like no other, and a must-see when visiting Ethiopia.

Omo Valley

Where Bizarre Feels Out of Place

It is here, in southern Ethiopia, that some of the most intriguing tribal traditions exist. Eight tribes dwell in various parts of this relatively small region, yet despite their proximity, tribal appearances and customs differ dramatically. The large lip-plates of the Mursi tribe, the white body paint of the Karo, the red ochre hair and body paint of the Hammer tribe are just some of the unique characteristics that set each of these incredible tribes apart. And traditions vary as much as do appearances. The Hammer tribe is known for bull-jumping ceremonies where a man of age must run across the back of bulls to prove his manhood. The Bodi are recognised by their Ka’el ceremonies where men must gorge themselves for months on milk and blood to become the ‘fattest of the tribe’, and the Mursi for their stick fighting. Diversity is beautiful, and the Omo Valley holds many incredible secrets.

Bale mountains

Home to the Ethiopian Wolf

Another of Ethiopia’s mystical mountain ranges. Uniquely beautiful and exhibiting the usual levels of endemism Ethiopia is known for, the Bale Mountains are a must-see for photographers, travellers and nature seekers alike. Their beautiful landscapes could be described as a paradise of flowery highlands and mythical forests, in the likes of the beautiful jungle-esque Harenna Forest. However, one of its claims to fame lies with the presence of the only ‘African wolf’ on the continent, the Ethiopian wolf that calls the Bale Mountains home. For any lover of wildlife and rare things, these mountains are worth the effort. A few days are usually needed to find this intriguing animal, but what a delight it is when you do meet the wolves! Some groups or individuals even allow you to step out of your vehicle and follow them at a reasonable distance. A chance to really get to know or photograph this truly unique species!

      Unique Wildlife

We want to see those flagship species of Africa. The elusive leopard on the hunt, a lion roaring outside your tent, a herd of elephant parting around your jeep. But some of the world’s most fascinating animals are overlooked, simply because they exist in such unique locations.  So why not something different, an adventure to a faraway place to find something rare…

      Remote cultures

Sometimes the wildlife of Africa seems to take the spotlight when it comes to reasons to visit the continent. What’s often forgotten about, and is as equally fascinating as the animals themselves, is the people who share the land with these very animals. Meet the tribes who have been here for millennia, learn about their bizarre culture and their exciting ceremonies.

      Historical significance

Every destination, if you dig deep enough,  has a history worthy of mention. But some places you need not dig, its overwhelming historical relevance and importance is hard to comprehend at first. Relics and ruins that date back thousands of years, still standing and some still in use. Rituals and ceremonies that go back centuries,  and can open you up to a new world

      Ethiopia’s remote cultures

Ethiopia is difficult to describe in words. Its unrivalled endemism and breathtaking mountain ranges make are probably to blame. This safari is designed for those with an interest in human history and remote cultures. It begins with a night in Addis Abba, a city riddled with fascinating history – and we certainly recommend a visit to the Addis History Museum.

After a short stay in Addis, you head to what is sometimes referred to as the ‘jewel’ of Ethiopia, Lalibela. The historical significance of Lalibela is comparable to only few other places in the world. Said to be built by Christians that were evading Sala Adin, almost a thousand years ago, eleven of the extraordinary rock churches still remain today. Built downward into the rock, these incredible pieces of architecture are the reason Lalibela is so famous. Taking a stroll down these chizzled passageways is most definitely a life-changing experience.

Speaking of life-changing – after Lalibela, we head to another fascinating and extraordinary place: The Omo Valley. Eight tribes exist in this southern region of Ethiopia and all of them more different from the other than you could possibly imagine: 15cm lip plates of the Mursi tribe contrast to the red ochre hairstyles of the hammer, or the intimidation body paint of the Karo and the ‘fat’ ceremonies of the Bodi. Just a small glimpse into of what makes the Omo Valley experience unlike any other on earth.

Fly back to Addis Ababa with your mind and heart buzzing over cultural and historical encounters that go beyond your wildest dreams for you onward flights home or to your exciting Odysseia add-on.

      Ethiopia’s indigenous wildlife

Ethiopia is a country known, amongst other reasons, for the high level of species endemism it is home to. Many of the fascinating species of wildlife found here are unique to Ethiopia, and sometimes to specific places within this magnificent country. This itinerary is for the wildlife-lovers and adventurers of the world who want to seek the animal ‘less seen’.

Start the journey with the usual stay in Addis Abba; where you  are free to explore the city as you please. After this, head towards the mysterious Gondar, a place holding its own historical significance, before climbing up to one of the world most scenically beautiful and mystifying mountain ranges: the Simien Mountains.

Here, we search for two specific species. The Gelada baboon and the Walia Ibex. Over time, the Gelada has acquired the nickname of ‘Simien Lion’, as its golden coat is similar to that of a lion and… it is simply exquisite. They live along the cliffs close to your accommodation, and along the high parts of the Simien Mountain range. Every day, the geladas leave the roost to go and forage, completely unafraid of humans, which means that you will be able to stroll amongst their groups of up to 800 individuals and be barely considered. There is no doubt that this makes for a truly unique and unforgettable encounter.

The Walia Ibex, a typical ibex in some ways, carries immense horns in a proud and powerful stature. What makes this species so special is where it dwells: only along the very highest parts of the Simien Mountains do you find this very rare antelope. But we can assure you that the search is well worth it when you see them roaming amongst rugged cliffs with gigantic drops.

Lastly, you head to the Bale Mountains in search of one of the rarest predators on earth, the Ethiopian Wolf. With only 500 left in the wild, there is little wonder as to why people make such an effort to find them. The beautiful Bale Mountains are the last refuge for this endangered species, which means that sightings are common here. The search for the red Ethiopian Wolf, combined with the jaw-dropping scenery of the Bale mountains and the Harena forest, make this a perfect ending to this unique and exciting itinerary.

So buckle up, get your floppy hat on, and ready yourself for an adventure of a lifetime.

From Gondar, you drive to the mystical Simien Mountains, where you search for the golden-maned Gelada baboon – the Simien Lion – and the Walia Ibex along the Mountain peaks. Both are magnificent creatures and well worth the effort of hiking the sometimes snow-capped tops of the Simien Mountains.

Next, you depart for  the mountains of Gheralta and Axum, another place of significant historical and spiritual importance. Visit the churches of Gheralta, built along vertical cliff faces, that at first glance are seemingly impossible to get to.

Known for mesmerising and colourful salt flats, the Danakil stands out for its shiny hues of topaz and turquoise that stretch on forever, dotted only by nomadic  salt mining caravans of camels and their riders. But there is more. Hidden deep within this sea of salt lays Erta Ahle, one of Africa’s most active and intriguing volcanoes.

      The Northern Circuit

History then wildlife, then history again, then landscapes to die for. Such is the rhythm of this beautiful circuit that takes you around the northern regions of Ethiopia. There is something for everyone on this adventure, so get ready for a journey like no other.

You begin this fascinating itinerary in the renowned and sacred Lalibela, a monument of Ethiopia. The extraordinary churches that compose Lalibela were built downwards, into solid rock. Rock that has been chipped away at for centuries by thousands of lives working tirelessly on the elaboration of the church structures, leaving us mere mortals with one of the world’s most significant historical sites.

After your stay in Lalibela, you head toward Gondar for a brief tour of Old Ethiopia and the citadels that tell the country’s dark story, before the start of a climb up one of Ethiopia’s most exciting destinations: the Simien Mountains. The endemic and extraordinary animals that dwell within are a must-see, from the hundreds of golden-maned Gelada baboons to the impressive Walia Ibex, ambling along treacherous snowy peaks. A marvel in every way.

Nextyour itinerary swings northwards still, toward Axum where you get to look further into the religious history of the country, – Ethiopia’s holy capital actually. In the same direction, you pass the Gheralta mountains to visit that churches built into the faces of dizzyingly high cliffs. An impossible climb, it would seem at first glance, but hidden pathways will take you, relatively easily, to these ancient wonders.

Lastly, from towering snow-peaked heights, you drop down, all the way to the lowest place in Africa: the Danakil Depression. Laying below sea-level, it is a complete contrast to previous places explored during the trip. Endless salt flats, hues of topaz and turquoise volcanoes and infinite camel caravans dotting the horizon, the Danakil Depression’s unworldly sight almost is truly memorable way to end this incredible Odyssey.
