South Africa

South Africa is a big favourite when it comes to African safari destinations, and for good reason. Several, actually. Accessibility, exclusivity, top-end hospitality and extraordinary biodiversity...to name a few. You can expect an unparalleled safari experience conducted by some of Africa's most highly trained and professional guides at just a short 45 minute flight from Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport. You will be looked after, wined and dined, treated as a family member and exposed to some of the finest game viewing in Africa. Another of South Africa's most noteworthy attractions, Cape Town, is also very easily accessible by air or road. The 'Mother City' is the ultimate blend of stunning coastline, mountainous panoramas, vibrant city life and cultural richness. Fine wine and dining, surfing, whale watching, hiking, horse riding, shark diving and fly fishing are just a few of Cape Town's very long list of activities. And then there's all the places in between, the Drakensberg, the Karoo, the Kalahari, Madikwe, the Garden Route... South Africa truly is the best combination of safari, culture, cuisine, history and adventure the continent has to offer.

A few of our favourite places in South Africa...

Cape Town

The Mother City

The oldest and most beautiful city in South Africa, Cape Town is a melting pot of culture, language, history and scenery. Nestled between majestic mountains and stunning beaches, located near the end of the world, Cape Town is a destination that should not be left off anyone’s South African itinerary. It has something for everyone; a vibrant nightlife, fine dining cuisine, whale watching, surfing, snorkelling, free diving the mysterious kelp forest, hiking and horse riding, to name a few. The province also boasts some of the most acclaimed vineyards in the world, and it would be rude to not sip a Pinotage or two during wine-tasting experiences.Historic tours bring this city’s fascinating past to life as experienced local guides interpret everything from the days of the very first explorer, Bartolomeu Dias, and his landing on Capetonian shores, to the slave trade, apartheid and Mandela’s time on Robben island, to the present day. Spending time in Cape Town will take you on a truly intellectual, exhilarating, culinary and fascinating journey to one of the world’s most interesting places, home to some of Africa’s finest hospitality.

Kalahari

A Semi-Desert Paradise

Derived from the Tswana word kgala meaning ‘the great thirst’ or kgalagadi meaning ‘a waterless place’, the Kalahari could be mistaken as a place one should avoid in their travels. Yet in this mythical place, sizing almost 900 000 km² lies a solace of peace and quiet that only a desert or semi-arid savannah can provide. A place where wind can blow dust for hundreds of kilometres before it settles. Where life springs from the sand in every direction. Elephants, cheetahs, brown hyenas and the famed Kalahari black-maned lions are amongst the creatures that will surprise you around each thicket or behind each dune. The Kalahari is also a stronghold for populations of meerkats, aardwolves, pangolins and aardvarks, making it the go-to destination in Africa to witness these rare and wonderful creatures. There’s room for everyone in the vastness of this place: the safari-goers, the explorers, the adventure seekers and those who just want to feel the silent energy of the Kalahari, those who want to feel the desert wind on their skin and stare into an endless starry sky.

Sabi Sands

Where ‘Leopards Fall Out of Every Tree’

There are few places on the continent that are as synonymous with Africa’s flagship species and luxury as the Sabi Sands. Named after two rivers, the Sand River and the Sabie river, that converge in the area lying along the southwestern boundary of Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sands Wildtuin is home to what is considered the densest lion and leopard population in Africa. The Sabi Sands is also considered the birthplace of eco-tourism in South Africa, where the wildlife has become accustomed to the sight of safari jeeps and will wander past, unperturbed by guests’ presence, only a few feet from game-viewing vehicles. The Sabis Sands offer leisurely activities in some of Africa’s most luxurious and renowned lodges. It is a place where lions and buffalo interact in a chaotic dance, where sightings of leopards on a prowl are a daily occurrence, and where wild dogs thrive. There is without doubt no better place to see the ‘big five’ than in the Sabi Sand Wildtuin.

Makuleke

Kruger's Hidden Secret

A place renowned for offering some of the most highly rated walking safaris in Africa –  and for good reason. Professional trail guides with a long-standing connection to the area lead you on interpretive experiences like no other. Feel the fever tree forest in all its glory, be dwarfed by groves of baobabs or stroll through avenues of jackal-berry trees, riddled with baboons, elephants, buffalo and more. But this is not all. The Makuleke is dotted with historical sites of immense relevance, not only to South Africa but to Africa as a whole. Ancient Zimbabwean civilisations can be traced to uncovered citadels in the area, signs of Phoenician traders are engraved in the rock gorges, dark memories of the ivory trade era and South Africa’s war for independence all stain the ground with old relics and foundations. Today it all adds to the intellectual, spiritual, biodiverse place that is the beautiful Makuleke.

Madikwe

Where Sunsets Burn with Red Dust

Madikwe sits at the crossroads of wildlife viewing, luxury accommodation and value for money. Bordering the Kalahari in northern South Africa, its habitat is rugged yet beautiful. Red dust is kicked into the sky and as the powerful rays of sunlight filter through, they ignite the plethora of wildlife that traverse the reserve to and from its water sources. A ‘big seven’ destination means that amongst this unique landscape one can regularly find leopard, lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, wild dog and cheetah. What was originally farmland is now a conservation miracle and teeming with abundant wildlife – the perfect destination for those wanting a safari with a purpose. Madikwe is a place where one doesn’t simply view the animals of Africa in all their glory, but also witness, first hand, how ‘man’ can rejuvenate previously depleted lands into true wilderness.

      Southern Africa Odyssey

      "an Africa like no other"

“South Africa was a life-changing experience for us. We had seen a lot of Africa before ut Andrew showed us an Africa like no other” – Brian Gibson

      Predator viewing

Africa wouldn’t be the same without them. The super-predators of Africa have captivated the world’s imagination for centuries, and for good reason. The majestic and magnificent lion, the shy and beautiful leopard, the lighting fast cheetah, and the ghostly but fascinating hyena. All of which are guaranteed to enchant and enthrall in the wildest ways.

      Luxury Safaris

This is where dreams come to life, where the most luxurious of the luxurious comes to the African bushveld to create a lodge experience like no other. Combining a world-class wilderness experience with five-star cuisine and hospitality, everything from gin bars, spar therapy, ensuite pools, private chefs and guides.

      Cape Town

There is a long list of reasons to see this beautiful and unique city, starting with the fact it was rated in the top 10 places in the world to retire. But for the traveler, there is equal reason to travel to the most southern tip of Africa. Vineyards producing some of the worlds best wine can be toured, wales can be watched from the shore, the rich history explained, and more.

Even though these itineraries are destination specific, it is a popular choice to witness more than one of Africa's iconic experiences. Below are some ideas of what you can add on to the beginning or end of this incredible safari.

      Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Nicknamed the 'leopard capital of the world' and for good reason. This extraordinary is teeming with wildlife, mainly the 'Big Five', on a scale that is unmatched on the continent.

      Okavango Delta

Certainly one of the most unique Parks in the world. A labyrinth of crystal clear streams, palm belts and jackal-berry forests. All of which are writhing with life.

      Like what you see?

Start in Gqebera (formerly Port Elizabeth) and transfer to the delightful place that is Addo Elephant National Park. Spend three full days stunned by the rolling hills and beautiful light, and the hundreds of elephants that roam its diverse biomes. Close encounters – very close encounters – with elephants are common, and the herds are relaxed around vehicles. Your heart will be beating like never before. Addo is also a beautiful conservation success, as only 11 elephants were left when the park was created in the 1930s.

From there, drive on to the Karoo, a semi-desert natural region of South Africa that was formed hundreds of millions of years ago. More specifically, in this itinerary, it is the Camdeboo part of the Karoo that you will spend time in. The Valley of Desolation, the name of which has become meme famous, is truly spectacular, and definitely deserves a sundowner visit. Go on a hike to the top of Mount Camdeboo, go on game drives across the concession, pay a visit to the Bushmen Rock Art cave paintings…there is lots to do in this beautiful part of the Karoo.

Still in the Karoo, you next transfer to Samara Private Game Reserve, whose efforts to re-wild the region are starting to pay off. After vowing to restore the magic of the Great Karoo (to bring back the springbok migration and the predators that once roamed these lands) it is safe to say that Samara’s founders have achieved something nothing short of remarkable. From overused, over-farmed, degraded soils to having thousands of wild animals treading this region’s regenerated lands, Samara is hope for the future and the perfect place for a reconnection with the natural world. Walk with rhinos, search for aardvark, track cheetahs, sit with lion prides and watch ellies pass by with tranquility. Go mountain biking or spend time sleeping under the stars…possibilities are endless.

With your mind full of stars and hope, you move on to the beautiful Plettenberg Bay. During Christmas and New Year, this place fills up with locals and becomes a bustling, vibrant and happy town. Otherwise, for those wanting more peace and quiet, the rest of the year is perfect – and all the natural spaces around Plettenberg Bay are wonderful for hiking and immersing oneself in forests and rocky powerful coasts. Horse-riding, hiking, cycling, swimming, surfing, exploring neighbouring and charming Knysna…possibilities are endless. Fly from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town or Johannesburg for your connecting flight home, or for your exciting add-ons to the trip – such as whale watching in Hermanus, spending time in Cape Town and exploring the Western Cape.

      A Southern African Odyssey

Adventure awaits ! And what an adventure – an Odyssey that takes you to some of our absolute favourite places in Southern Africa. Begin in South Africa, in Johannesburg, where you will take a small chartered flight to the Pafuri Airstrip, north of the famous Kruger National Park. The first part of your safari is to a place very dear to Andrew’s heart, as it is where he completed his trails guide training many moons ago: the Makuleke Concession, nestled between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers. A place he continuously refers to as his favourite in Africa, smitten with the wondrous fever tree forest and stunning biodiversity. Experience walking and driving safaris, sleep-outs in the bush should you wish for it, the most diverse ecosystem in the Kruger, and the place to yourself. While everyone flocks to southern Kruger, you will have incredible access to a place that has 75% of the park’s species and is a true wonderland for photographers.

From there, already close to the border with Zimbabwe, you transfer to another delightfully stunning place, Gonarezhou National Park. Blissfully off the beaten track, Gonarezhou is home to thousands of elephants that roam amongst the spectacular Chiloso Cliffs, beautiful mopane and miombo woodland, gushing rapids, endless shades of red, ochre and green. Spend your time exploring this special place, staying at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, from which you can game drive, hike the stunning Chivilia Falls, arrange cultural visits and listen to the 400 different species of bird songs echo around you.

Next, we fly to the thunderous Victoria Falls, the Mosi Oa Tunya. A sight so lovely must have made angels weep upon its sight, declared David Livingstone in his description of the Victoria Falls. Enjoy the exciting activities and stunning views of the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ during your time in Victoria Falls. If you wish, you can see both sides of the Falls during your trip – it’s just a quick crossing over the Victoria Falls bridge, from which thrilling adventures can also take place. Victoria Falls is a vibrant and buzzing town – whilst you’re there, don’t forget to stop at Simba’s Artisan Bakery for yummy pastries and sourdough bread that would make the French pale with envy.

It’s time to head to both Alice and Andrew’s favourite place in Africa – Mana Pools National Park, bordered by the mighty Zambezi River. Walking is king here, and nothing quite beats spending time with Africa’s great animals on foot. The elephants here have adapted to their landscape, and the big males reach up, balancing on their hind legs to attain higher tree branches, sending leaves, fruit and sticks crashing down, on which other elephants and grazers feed. And how to write about Mana without mentioning its enthralling powers over the soul? At dawn and dusk, magic happens as pools of golden, pink and orange light filter through the blue Albida Forest. If you’re lucky, an animal may just be basking in that forest light – and even baboons will become photographic subjects.

After your mind-whirling time in Mana Pools, take a boat to cross the Zambezi into Zambia, and drive to the Chirundu border post before transferring to Lusaka. It’s time to travel to the land of leopards – the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park. Kaingo (‘leopard’ in the local Bemba dialect) is located deep in leopard territories. Lions, wild dogs, elephants, endemic Thornycroft giraffe, hyena, carmine bee-eaters and all sorts of other ungulates and birds roam the mahogany forests, Luangwa river banks and diverse woodlands. The hides at Kaingo Lodge are well worth a stop to spend intimate moments with wildlife. And the food, prepared by Chef Catherine, will make you want to stay forever! But you must eventually fly back to Lusaka for your onward travel arrangements – or maybe other Odysseia add-ons to our favourite places in Africa?
