Off the Beaten Track

Safaris and adventures in search of African magic are no longer experiences just for the bold. With the African continent gaining in (well deserved) popularity, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to venture to places that are truly off the beaten track. East Africa, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Rwanda - getting around is fairly straightforward, and luxury lodges dot each of the most famous national reserves and places high on bucket lists. Nowadays, going on safari is incredibly safe - so much so that some people are now in search of experiences a little more... adventurous. Despite millions of photos, documentaries, stories flooding the internet with some of Africa’s most famous landmarks, we believe there is still room for places where few tourists venture - even within countries that seem to hold no more secrets. These experiences are, for us, a way to go and explore parts of the world that receive little attention, to support incredible initiatives and bring back tourism to what we believe it should stand for: meaningful, respectful, supportive and life-enriching journeys.

A few Off the Beaten Track adventures...

Malawian adventures

Spectacular highlands, rolling hills, mysterious plateaux and crystal clear lakes

Malawi, a landlocked country seldom known by tourists, but a wonderful place of spectacular highlands, rolling hills, mysterious plateaux and crystal clear lakes, and warm smiles – Malawi has it all. Not to mention this country’s incredible comeback on the wildlife front, as it welcomed healthy populations of lions, cheetah, elephants, rhinos and wild dogs within its parks. Officially considered a big five destination, Malawi remains one of the continent’s most underrated countries. Though we secretly hope this little gem of a place remains off the mass-tourism radar, Malawi is that country everyone tells you to travel to now, before tourists flock to it in hundreds of thousands. It has just been recognised as Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2022, after all. One of Africa’s most welcoming countries, its landscapes will enchant you with their intriguing Scottish looks. Well, that is, until you reach the Lake. Rolling hills of emerald green give way to ancient baobabs, white sand and turquoise waters filled with a myriad of gleaming scales in every possible shade of colour. In the north, the Nyika Plateau bursts into bloom during the rainy season (December-April), where hundreds of different orchid species erupt into colour. Be it to relax on a tropical island, to go on bush walks in Majete Wildlife Reserve, game drives or game boat cruises in palm-tree filled Liwonde National Park, or to take a hike up the Island in the Sky (the Mulanje massif), there is something for every adventurer. And tea drinking – a must in one of Africa’s most renowned speciality tea-brewing countries.

Makuleke Trails

Be dwarfed by groves of baobabs

Few places in the world match the Makuleke province both in terms of biodiversity and historical relevance. A place renowned for offering some of the most highly rated walking safaris in Africa – and for good reason. Professional trails guides with a long-standing connection to the area lead you on interpretive experiences like no other. Feel the fever tree forest in all its glory, be dwarfed by groves of baobabs or stroll through avenues of jackal-berry trees, riddled with baboons, elephants, buffalo and more. But this is not all. The Makuleke is dotted with historical sites of immense relevance, not only to South Africa but to Africa as a whole. Ancient Zimbabwean civilisations can be traced to uncovered citadels in the area, signs of Phoenician traders are engraved in the rock gorges, dark memories of the ivory trade era and South Africa’s war for independence all stain the ground with old relics and foundations. Today it all adds to the intellectual, spiritual, biodiverse place that is the beautiful Makuleke.

Gabon's hidden secrets

Forest buffalo and elephants grazing the Atlantic beaches

Gabon is a unique destination that takes the senses and the mind on a wonderful adventure across its incredibly diverse landscapes (through perhaps the body as well as you trek for habituated Lowland Gorilla, Mandrills and Chimpanzees). Lush jungles of all kinds, biodiverse rivers, waterfalls, forest wildlife and a cultural heritage that retraces the origins of mankind will leave you enthralled – but so will Gabonese beaches. In the dry season (June – November), outstanding sightings of humpback whales and dolphins migrating towards warmer waters can be observed. And from November to April, sea turtles come to lay eggs on the beaches of Pongara, with hatching occurring around mid-season onwards. But what makes Gabon truly unique is the chances to find forest buffalo and elephants grazing the Atlantic beaches, and hippos enjoying the cool and strong surf. Gabon will never cease to enchant you, bringing something a little different everywhere you look.

Kafue National Park

Zambia's untold secret

Little is known about this extraordinary park – surprisingly so, for it is one of the largest in Africa. Wild and raw, the Kafue is explored by those who long for adventures off the beaten track, perhaps sprinkled with the comfort of fine luxury lodging. The park exhibits diversity in fauna and flora matched only by a few other places on the continent. We think of the endemic Black-cheeked lovebirds flittering along the Nanzhila Plains, the teeming animal life all along the magnificent Kafue river, the healthy wild dog population thriving around Musekese, the black-maned roaring lions of Busanga plains… and so much more. Home to an exciting array of accommodation and safari options, many of which are unique to the Kafue, visitors can enjoy some of the best canoeing safaris in Africa, walking safaris and vehicle-bound expeditions led by highly trained and professional guides. We love the Kafue, and it happens to be the place where Andrew started his guiding career, too!

Baïs of CAR

An array of unique forest-dwelling creatures

One of the Congo Basin’s most biodiverse areas, the Dzanga-Sangha ecosystem is a puzzle of many landscapes. Rivers, marshlands, deep jungle and streams, Dzanga-Sangha is particularly famous for its Baïs, typical swampy forest clearings holding key nutritional advantages for local species. The Dzanga Baï is perhaps the most famous of all the baïs, attracting large herds of forest elephants – sometimes counting hundreds of pachyderms, happily wallowing in the mineral and pigment-rich clay and soil. Western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees are also a big favourite, as are the very rare and beautiful bongos, sitatunga and an array of unique forest-dwelling herbivores. The spectacular Sangha river runs past the only two lodges of the park. Dzanga-Sangha is a part of the world that remains truly pristine, untouched, wild and filled with astounding levels of biodiversity.

      Add on another great experience!

Even though these itineraries are destination specific, it is a popular choice to witness more than one of Africa's iconic experiences. Below are some ideas of what you can add on to the beginning or end of this incredible safari.

      Kenyan Coast

An often overlooked experience but one that visitors to the turquoise waters and endless beaches of Kenya's coast will never forget.

      Amboseli National Park

Renowned for its great elephants that sport some of the largest tusks in Africa, situated on the fascinating Lake Amboseli at the foot-hills of Mt Kilimanjaro.

      Mystical Malawi

Are you ready to get lost in the lush and green country of Malawi? Begin in the mysterious forest environment and the endless streams that form the beautiful Majete Game Reserve, exploring for lions and cheetahs, elephants and buffalo. Gentle nyala roam all around and the roaring Shire river is always in the background.

Make your way to the mystical Mount Mulanje, staying on an old tea plantation to travel back in time. Go for excursions on the ‘Mountain in the Mist’, appreciating the intriguing landscapes and the summits towering above the clouds.

Next, head to the beautiful and enthralling Liwonde National Park. Dense moping woodland, magical fever tree groves, wide open floodplain dotted with Lala and Borassus palm trees and endless termite mounds, ancient baobabs and heavy sausage trees make for a truly unique landscape. Your heart will soar during the sunrise and sunset cruises on the Shire river, or the  game drives and walks in the lush mopane woodlands in search of Black rhino, big cats, elephant and countless birds – over 400 species to be precise. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the recently reintroduced wild dogs. You will be treated like royalty with Central African Wilderness Safaris, and Mvuu will feel like a home away from home.

Transfer to Nkhata Bay, north of Lake Malawi for pristine turquoise waters away from the crowds. Colourful cichlids will take your breath away as you find yourself immersed in waters rivalling the Caribbean.

Finally, reach the wondrous Nyika plateau, a place that reminded David Livingstone of his Scottish highlands. It is almost impossible to describe the Nyika Plateau in a way that would do this incredible place justice. During the rainy season, hundreds of wild orchids burst into bloom, and the famous green rolling hills are an explosion of colour. Home to the highest density of leopard in the area, there is also something quite magical about herds of zebra and roan antelope roaming amongst colourful lands. Be sure to pack warm clothes as the evenings get freezing – but a roaring fire and a hit water bottle in your chalet-like bedroom will keep you warm. The entire Chelinda experience is a true wonder and you will never want to leave!  Malawi truly is a destination like no other, and one that we could not love more!

Gorgeous Gabon - For the Explorers

Bienvenue au Gabon! Africa’s best kept secret, with pristine oceanic beaches, unique forest wildlife and incredible biodiversity. Start your adventure in Libreville, the capital, before heading south along the coast to the mystical Loango national park. Forest elephants roam the beaches and hippos bathe in the surf, and inland, you can track a habituated western lowland gorilla family – the Atananga troop.

Transfer to Ivindo National Park, considered to be Africa’s ‘Last Living Eden’. Incredible waterfalls, exotic species, wild equatorial rainforests, Ivindo is a place like no other.  Hiking, pirogues, no electricity and no hot water, simple and fresh local food, this incredible park is rugged and for those who are not afraid to get their feet wet. But it is wildly rewarding, as paraffin lamps illuminate your dinner and the sounds of the bush lull you to sleep right next to the Kongou Falls. This trip also includes an excursion to the Langoué Baï, difficult to reach, but well worth the effort. Only discovered in 2000, this forest clearing is as pristine as it gets, and only the elite few wonder these less trodden paths. Rare wildlife, from pangolins to golden cats, vast numbers of apes and monkeys of all sorts, leopards, 400 bird species and endless numbers of plants and insects. The days spent in Ivindo end with a journey to the neighbouring Lopé National Park, where 1420 mandrills roam free, amongst many other species of apes great and small, new and old world monkeys. The exquisitely rustic and ideally located Moabi Tented Camp is the perfect setting for your beautiful expeditions into the savannah and forests of Lopé….the oldest biosphere on the African continent.

The last leg of your Gabonese Odyssey will take you to Pongara, an idyllic beach destination to rest…and fall in love once more with Gabon. Pristine really is the word for Gabon, as the park’s coastline overflows with biodiversity. Full day marine excursions, sea turtles, more elephants, mangroves, fishing…a different kind of safari awaits. Return to Libreville for your ongoing travels with a heart beating to the rhythm of Ivindo’s forests, full with exquisite encounters, and soul recharged to the sound of crashing waves, elephant rumbles and equatorial rainforest whispers.

      East Africa

A week or so exploring the great plains of East Africa search of the vast herds and the predators that follow them.

      Off the Beaten Track

If you think you know Tanzania…think again. Not interested in the typical tourist travels? We’ve got you covered. Begin in Dar es Salaam, where you take a small flight to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). Wild palm tree, savannah and forest scenes have granted this stunning, pristine wilderness a UNESCO heritage status. Explore the sandy islands, hot springs, the canyon-like structures that form part of the Rufiji River as you search for some of Africa’s largest herds of the endangered sable antelopes, lion prides, endless elephant herds, myriad of birds and the countless species we’ve forgotten to mention. Walk, game drive, navigate and soak in this incredible place – especially because you might just have it all to yourself!

Next, fly to what is arguably Tanzania’s best kept secret. Ruaha National Park receives the equivalent of 5% of the influx of tourism the Serengeti receives…and it is Tanzania’s second biggest national park. Some of Africa’s best guides work there, the perfect attribute to a place that carries a true sense of wilderness. Game viewing is excellent, in a backdrop of granite domes, baobab avenues, rolling hills and wide open plains. Ruaha’s walking safaris are famous for their quality, and we could not choose a better way of experiencing the bush – nothing beats roaming along wildlife on foot!

If you thought this Odyssey could not get more exclusive…it’s time to fly to Katavi National Park. Access is tricky, but the brave are rewarded with more untouched wilderness, high densities of buffalo-hunting lions….in fact, high densities of game in general.

The last leg of the trip will take you to the fabulous shores of Lake Tanganyika: Mahale Mountains. A very remote and unique place to track chimpanzees. An extraordinary location of green mountains towering up into heavy clouds; falling into shades of white and turquoise. Chimpanzee cries echo around you as dhows sail peacefully ahead. A secret dappled haven. Fly back to either Kilimnjaro or Dar es Salaam after an incredible safari that will hopefully have shown you another story of Tanzania.

Even though these itineraries are destination specific, it is a popular choice to witness more than one of Africa's iconic experiences. Below are some ideas of what you can add on to the beginning or end of this incredible safari.

      The Great Migration

Witness what is one of the world's Natural Wonders, and for good reason. The herds themselves stretch into the horizon and are regularly watched by all sorts of predators along the way.

      Dive Mafia Island

Endless beaches and forests of palm trees make this a quintessential beach-holiday destination. But some of the best diving, especially for whale sharks, has it stand out from other coastal destinations in Africa.

      Off the Beaten Track

Think you know South Africa – heard it all, seen it all and you want something different? Then perhaps, let us surprise you. If you’ve been to the Sabi Sands, the Kalahari, driven the Kruger from north to south, seen every rock off Table Mountain and surfed in Durban or Jeffrey’s Bay, then how about this? Start in Gqebera (formerly Port Elizabeth) and transfer to the delightful place that is Addo Elephant National Park. Spend three full days stunned by the rolling hills and beautiful light, and the hundreds of elephants that roam its diverse biomes. Close encounters – very close encounters – with elephants are common, and the herds are relaxed around vehicles. Your heart will be beating like never before. Addo is also a beautiful conservation success, as only 11 elephants were left when the park was created in the 1930s.

From there, drive on to the Karoo, a semi-desert natural region of South Africa that was formed hundreds of millions of years ago. More specifically, in this itinerary, it is the Camdeboo part of the Karoo that you will spend time in. The Valley of Desolation, the name of which has become meme famous, is truly spectacular, and definitely deserves a sundowner visit. Go on a hike to the top of Mount Camdeboo, go on game drives across the concession, pay a visit to the Bushmen Rock Art cave paintings…there is lots to do in this beautiful part of the Karoo.

Still in the Karoo, you next transfer to Samara Private Game Reserve, whose efforts to re-wild the region are starting to pay off. After vowing to restore the magic of the Great Karoo (to bring back the springbok migration and the predators that once roamed these lands) it is safe to say that Samara’s founders have achieved something nothing short of remarkable. From overused, over-farmed, degraded soils to having thousands of wild animals treading this region’s regenerated lands, Samara is hope for the future and the perfect place for a reconnection with the natural world. Walk with rhinos, search for aardvark, track cheetahs, sit with lion prides and watch ellies pass by with tranquility. Go mountain biking or spend time sleeping under the stars…possibilities are endless.

With your mind full of stars and hope, you move on to the beautiful Plettenberg Bay. During Christmas and New Year, this place fills up with locals and becomes a bustling, vibrant and happy town. Otherwise, for those wanting more peace and quiet, the rest of the year is perfect – and all the natural spaces around Plettenberg Bay are wonderful for hiking and immersing oneself in forests and rocky powerful coasts. Horse-riding, hiking, cycling, swimming, surfing, exploring neighbouring and charming Knysna…possibilities are endless. Fly from Plettenberg Bay to Cape Town or Johannesburg for your connecting flight home, or for your exciting add-ons to the trip – such as whale watching in Hermanus, spending time in Cape Town and exploring the Western Cape.
