Apes Great and Small

Anyone who has spent time with chimpanzees or bonobos in the forests of central Africa would be hard pressed to dispute the fact that they are humans' closest living relatives. From the tiny talapoin monkey to chacma baboons and silverback gorillas, the similarities extend well beyond simple DNA. We have more behavioural similarities than we do differences and that is one reason why viewing apes in the wild is one of the most fascinating and thought-provoking experiences on earth.

A few of our favourite Ape experiences...

Chimpanzees

Charismatic and chaotic

It is only when one encounters a community of chimpanzees within the dense forests of central and east Africa does one begin to understand why the infamous Dr Jane Goodall spent decades of her life in their company. Just a few minutes is enough to impart a profound sense of awe and appreciation. The chimpanzee is a large ape that lives in a groups of up to 150 individuals. Although these larger communities are usually spread out over a fair distance, it only takes a few individuals together to shake the forest out of its apparent slumber and send chills down your spine. These tight family groups are notorious for spontaneous disagreements, usually sounding much worse than they are, that will make your ears ring. Screams, shouts and the eerie drumming of hollow trees is an invitation to follow the frantic group through the forest as the chaos climbs to a crescendo. Then abrupt silence. Birds and insects gradually resume their forest undertakings while the group return gentle gazes and gestures. This period of reparation allows one the opportunity for respite and reflection.

Gelada Baboon

The ‘Simien Lion’

Gelada monkeys, or baboons as they are more commonly called, are amongst the most fascinating and iconic primates. They are the soul surviving member of a lineage of ‘beast like grazing apes’. Troops can reach up to 800 individuals and their vocal repertoire is as diverse and complex as their social structure.  Male gelada monkeys are adorned with a shaggy, golden mane, hence the nickname ‘Simien lion’, that draws photographers from far and wide. Perhaps even more magnificent than the animals themselves is the habitat in which they are found; the mythical Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia. To many who visit, these mountains stand atop the podium of African scenery.

Western Lowland Gorillas

Wanderers of the lowland jungle

The Western Lowland Gorilla is the smallest of four subspecies of gorilla. It is the most abundant occupying a range from the Republic of Congo to Cameroon. They have comparatively wider skulls, smaller ears and their coat, particularly on their head and chest, have an auburn tinge. Their low altitude habitat supports a significantly higher level of biodiversity than that of their highland cousins. An abundance of African forest elephants, red forest buffalo, chimpanzees, giant forest hogs, African grey parrots and others makes this an experience equal, if not superior, to that of the better known mountain gorilla.

Mountain Gorillas

Majestic Giants

It’s easy to see why mountain gorillas have held captive the imagination of people the world over. Immortalised in countless works such as King Kong and Planet of the Apes the mountain gorilla is perhaps the most renowned of all great apes. Eye contact with an adult silverback will reduce one to a puddle of awe, wonder and humility. It is an ineffable moment bordering on the divine. At 5.5 feet tall and 440 pounds in weight their sheer size alone is enough to take ones breath away. Sitting comfortably amongst a family of mountain gorillas is an overwhelming experience. Their emotions and gestures are so far removed and yet so familiar to are own. Their young frolic about beneath the watchful supervision of their mothers while the adult male tolerates our presence. With a population that stands at a little over 1000 individuals spread over the Virunga massif and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, it is one of the most sought after wildlife experiences in Africa.

Mandrills

The blue-faced wonder

Of the mandrill Charles Darwin wrote,”no other member in the whole class of mammals is coloured in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrill”. With their striking red and blue facial markings, males are without doubt the most colourful primate protagonist in the rain forests of Gabon, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of the Congo. Mandrills are a reclusive monkey that live in large hordes of up to several hundred. The largest verifiable record of 1300 mandrills was recorded in Lope National Park in Gabon. Mating occurs annually from June to October during which these larger congregations take place. Dominance, hierarchy and the associated vocalisations and behaviours are at the core of mandrill society. From aggressive ‘ground slaps’ to a ‘silent, bared-teeth’ expression complete with head shakes, mandrill interaction is as captivating as it gets in the world of primates.

"an experince that changed my life"

Seeing the gorillas for the first time took my breath away. An experience that changed my life and far exceeded the expectations I had for the expedition – Susan Kelly

      Ultimate Uganda: For the adventurers

Welcome to equatorial Uganda! Adventure awaits in the beautiful, biodiverse, culturally rich country that is Uganda. Begin in Entebbe, and take a transfer flight to the remote Kidepo Valley National Park. Pristine, rugged, a lesser-known savannah, the Valley is the only place in Uganda to find cheetahs. Hordes of giraffe, ostrich, and hartebeest amble around you, not to mention elephants, and predators. Game drives, walking safaris, exploring natural hot springs are some of the amazing activities that you can do in one of the true last wild places of Africa, surrounded by the Kidepo and Narus Rivers.

From Kidepo, take a scenic chartered flight to another off the beaten track destination in Uganda – Murchison Falls. The perfect place to take a boat trip to the foot of the impressive falls, and go on game drives around this biodiverse and impressive ecosystem. In addition to game drives, you can also go on boating safaris, heading downstream, toward the place where the Nile river delta gives way to Lake Albert.

It’s now time to meet Andrew’s natural brothers, the chimpanzees. Fly to Kibale National Park, and arrive at the wonderful Primate Lodge, located deep within the park – the only lodge so far inside and so well placed to begin a trek. If you’re lucky, the chimps may even hang around the lodge. Listen to their cries echo across the forest, as well as the songs of tropical birds and the monkeying around of 12 other species of primates. At the end of your trek, you can also take the opportunity to visit the stunning volcanic crater lakes outside of the forest.

After thrilling encounters with chimps, you then head to Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for the tree climbing lions of Ishasha. Game drive around crater lakes, forest and savannah, and take a boat trip up the Kazinga Channel to get another perspective of the wildlife. If you’re lucky, you’ll stumble across the impressive sight that is seeing lions – male and female – relaxing up a tree. Queen Elizabeth is also home to the rare shoebill stork, an incredible prehistoric bird.

The final leg of your trip brings you to what is perhaps one of the most beautiful wildlife encounters one can have: gorillas. There is nothing quite like spending time on foot with animals that resemble us like they do. Intelligent eyes will look at you from the vegetation, playful babies zoom around you, sometimes too curious and stumbling very close towards these strange hairless creatures that have come to spend an hour with them.

After your last gorilla trek, head back to Entebbe for your trip home or onward travels with us!

      Kenyas coast

An often overlooked experience but one that visitors to the turquoise waters and endless beaches of Kenya's coast will never forget.

      Ethiopia’s indigenous wildlife

Ethiopia is a country known, amongst other reasons, for the high level of species endemism it is home to. Many of the fascinating species of wildlife found here are unique to Ethiopia, and sometimes to specific places within this magnificent country. This itinerary is for the wildlife-lovers and adventurers of the world who want to seek the animal ‘less seen’.

Start the journey with the usual stay in Addis Abba; where you  are free to explore the city as you please. After this, head towards the mysterious Gondar, a place holding its own historical significance, before climbing up to one of the world most scenically beautiful and mystifying mountain ranges: the Simien Mountains.

Here, we search for two specific species. The Gelada baboon and the Walia Ibex. Over time, the Gelada has acquired the nickname of ‘Simien Lion’, as its golden coat is similar to that of a lion and… it is simply exquisite. They live along the cliffs close to your accommodation, and along the high parts of the Simien Mountain range. Every day, the geladas leave the roost to go and forage, completely unafraid of humans, which means that you will be able to stroll amongst their groups of up to 800 individuals and be barely considered. There is no doubt that this makes for a truly unique and unforgettable encounter.

The Walia Ibex, a typical ibex in some ways, carries immense horns in a proud and powerful stature. What makes this species so special is where it dwells: only along the very highest parts of the Simien Mountains do you find this very rare antelope. But we can assure you that the search is well worth it when you see them roaming amongst rugged cliffs with gigantic drops.

Lastly, you head to the Bale Mountains in search of one of the rarest predators on earth, the Ethiopian Wolf. With only 500 left in the wild, there is little wonder as to why people make such an effort to find them. The beautiful Bale Mountains are the last refuge for this endangered species, which means that sightings are common here. The search for the red Ethiopian Wolf, combined with the jaw-dropping scenery of the Bale mountains and the Harena forest, make this a perfect ending to this unique and exciting itinerary.
