Walking Safaris

It is no doubt that we sometimes feel disconnected to the world, to nature more so. Hence our travels to far out places, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hence the joy we feel when on safari jeeps and all one can hear is the wind, birds and occasional vocals of nearby animals. But what if we could get even closer to nature, to actually feel it - and feel a part of it? Few things are more immersive and humbling than a walking safari. Rubbing your hands down the bark of a passing tree, the sand fills your shoes and sounds of birds and gentle footsteps fill your ears, as you stroll through ancient woodlands as quietly as possible, nature is aware of you now. Animals no longer just graze, oblivious, as the jeep passes by, they consider your presence, they watch you intently. Your professional walking guide interprets their every move, as they interpret yours. Nature educates you, guiding your instinct and the power of your very own senses. Your (re)connection to yourself is born again.

A few of our favourite Walking Safari experiences...

Mana Pools

Walking amongst giants

It is almost a fairy-tale, how could it be real, we may ask when told of the stories of Mana Pools. The red fire of the African day’s final moments cuts through the deep blues of the Ana tree forest and paints the land in a way so unique to the inexorably beautiful Mana Pools. You are on foot alongside some of Africa’s most renowned pro-guides, who will lead you into something you could never have prepared yourself for. Your heart rate will rise, naturally, when you first accept you are approaching a group of elephants or wild dogs or lions, on foot, without a jeep or barrier between you and them. But when you are with them, and under the safe guidance of Zimbabwe’s pro-guides, the world falls away. All you can hear is the sound of elephants rumbling gently around you. The breath exhaled from their trunk can be heard as they search the forest floor for pods to eat. And then you see it, time stands still, one of the old bulls stiffens, stretches his trunk upwards, contracts his hindquarters before rising on his back legs, reaching up for higher, otherwise unattainable branches. You brace as he descends, his trunk wrapped around a branch, yet only small plumes of dust escape his feet as they softly land back on the ground. You breathe again, the elephants have come and gone, yet you are content, you are changed forever.

The Makuleke

Ancient Forest, Great herds and Stories of old Africa

Few places in the world match the Makuleke province both in terms of biodiversity and historical relevance. A place renowned for offering some of the most highly rated walking safaris in Africa – and for good reason. Professional trails guides with a long-standing connection to the area lead you on interpretive experiences like no other. Feel the fever tree forest in all its glory, be dwarfed by groves of baobabs or stroll through avenues of jackal-berry trees, riddled with baboons, elephants, buffalo and more. But this is not all. The Makuleke is dotted with historical sites of immense relevance, not only to South Africa but to Africa as a whole. Ancient Zimbabwean civilisations can be traced to uncovered citadels in the area, signs of Phoenician traders are engraved in the rock gorges, dark memories of the ivory trade era and South Africa’s war for independence all stain the ground with old relics and foundations. Today it all adds to the intellectual, spiritual, biodiverse place that is the beautiful Makuleke.

The South Luangwa

Where it all started

Walking safaris, it could be said, were birthed in the wildlife-rich valleys of the South Luangwa. Hardened explorers of old have always trekked across the wilds of Africa, their stories often told in biographies of the likes of Stanley or Livingstone. However it was Norman Carr of Zambia who first walked tourists into Africa’s enchanting woodlands in search of magnificent animals. Today, Norman Carr’s legacy lives on through some of the finest walking safaris in Africa and in some of the largest concentrations of wildlife on the continent. Highly experienced guides have been taught this ‘art’ of walking safaris and will introduce you to the wilds of Africa in a way that will ground you, connect you to nature and leave you with a far greater understanding and appreciation for the wild than ever before.

Did you know that Zambia is a pioneering destination for walking safaris? Norman Carr made safaris on foot the ultimate Zambian adventure, moving away from hunting safaris in a move largely ahead of his time, decades ago. So where better to experience such a thrilling and wonderful rush than the pioneering camps designed by Norman Carr himself, traversing the enchanting South Luangwa? There is something sublime and beautifully humbling about being at ground level with some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife. Feel your senses heighten as you walk from camp to camp, and enjoy activities and rest as you reach every one of Norman Carr’s wonderful creations. The ideal walking experience itinerary starts at Luwi Bushcamp, and you will gradually make your way up to Nsolo Bushcamp, Kakumi camp and finish at the stunning Mchenja Camp. Wildlife viewing is superb – though fear not, if bushwalks to 4 different camps is too much, we can always mix it up to ensure you have the best possible experience. Consider adding on an excursion to the stunning Victoria Falls, for a relaxing time after channeling your inner adventurer.

      Victoria Falls

Its no wonder...that this cascade of water in western Zambia is one of the Natural Wonders of the World. It has to e seen to be believed.

      Chobe National Park

Known for extraordinary numbers of elephant, lion, leopard and lots more. Bordering the mighty Zambezi, this destination will never let you down!

      A Southern African Odyssey

Adventure awaits ! And what an adventure – an Odyssey that takes you to some of our absolute favourite places in Southern Africa. Begin in South Africa, in Johannesburg, where you will take a small chartered flight to the Pafuri Airstrip, north of the famous Kruger National Park. The first part of your safari is to a place very dear to Andrew’s heart, as it is where he completed his trails guide training many moons ago: the Makuleke Concession, nestled between the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers. A place he continuously refers to as his favourite in Africa, smitten with the wondrous fever tree forest and stunning biodiversity. Experience walking and driving safaris, sleep-outs in the bush should you wish for it, the most diverse ecosystem in the Kruger, and the place to yourself. While everyone flocks to southern Kruger, you will have incredible access to a place that has 75% of the park’s species and is a true wonderland for photographers.

From there, already close to the border with Zimbabwe, you transfer to another delightfully stunning place, Gonarezhou National Park. Blissfully off the beaten track, Gonarezhou is home to thousands of elephants thant roam amongst spectacular Chiloso Cliffs, beautiful mopane and miombo woodland, gushing rapids, shades of red, ochre and green. Spend your time exploring this special place, staying at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, from which you can game drive, hike the stunning Chivilia Falls, arrange cultural visits and listen to the songs of 400 different species echo around you.

Next, we fly to the thunderous Victoria Falls, the Mosi Oa Tunya. A sight so lovely must have made angels weep upon its sight, declared David Livingstone in his description of the Falls. Enjoy the thrilling activities and stunning views of the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ during your time in Victoria Falls. If you wish, you can see both sides of the Falls during your trip – it’s just a quick crossing over the Victoria Falls bridge, from which adrenaline-filled adventures await. Victoria Falls is a vibrant and buzzing town – whilst you’re there, don’t forget to stop at Simba’s Artisan Bakery for yummy pastries and sourdough bread that would make the French pale with envy.

It’s time to head to both Alice and Andrew’s  favourite place in Africa – Mana Pools National Park, bordered by the mighty Zambezi River. Walking is king here, and nothing quite beats spending time with Africa’s great animals on foot. The elephants here have adapted to their landscape, and the big bulls have learned to balance on their hind legs to reach higher tree branches, bringing down leaves, fruit and sticks on which other elephants and grazers feed. And how to write about Mana without mentioning its enthralling powers over the soul? At dawn and dusk, magic happens as pools of golden, pink and orange light filter through the blue Albida Forest. If you’re lucky, an animal may just be basking in that forest light – and even baboons will become photographic subjects.

After your mind-whirling time in Mana Pools, take a boat to cross the Zambezi into Zambia, and drive to the Chirundu border post before transferring to Lusaka. It’s time to travel to the land of leopards – the Nsefu sector of the South Luangwa National Park. Kaingo (‘leopard’ in the local Bemba dialect) is located deep within leopard territories. Lions, wild dogs, elephants, endemic Thornycroft giraffe, hyena, carmine bee-eaters and all sorts of other ungulates and birds roam the mahogany forests, Luangwa river banks and diverse woodlands. The hides at Kaingo Lodge are well worth a stop to spend intimate moments with wildlife. And the food, prepared by Chef Catherine, will make you want to stay forever! But you must eventually fly back to Lusaka for your onward travel arrangements – or maybe other Odysseia add-ons to our favourite places in Africa?

      Okavango Delta

Certainly one of the most unique Parks in the world. A labyrinth of crystal clear streams, palm belts and jackal-berry forests. All of which are writhing with life.

      Off the Beaten Track

If you think you know Tanzania…think again. Not interested in the typical tourist travels? We’ve got you covered. Begin in Dar es Salaam, where you take a small flight to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). Wild palm tree, savannah and forest scenes have granted this stunning, pristine wilderness a UNESCO heritage status. Explore the sandy islands, hot springs, the canyon-like structures that form part of the Rufiji River as you search for some of Africa’s largest herds of the endangered sable antelopes, lion prides, endless elephant herds, myriad of birds and the countless species we’ve forgotten to mention. Walk, game drive, navigate and soak in this incredible place – especially because you might just have it all to yourself!

Next, fly to what is arguably Tanzania’s best kept secret. Ruaha National Park receives the equivalent of 5% of the influx of tourism the Serengeti receives…and it is Tanzania’s second biggest national park. Some of Africa’s best guides work there, the perfect attribute to a place that carries a true sense of wilderness. Game viewing is excellent, in a backdrop of granite domes, baobab avenues, rolling hills and wide open plains. Ruaha’s walking safaris are famous for their quality, and we could not choose a better way of experiencing the bush – nothing beats roaming along wildlife on foot!

If you thought this Odyssey could not get more exclusive…it’s time to fly to Katavi National Park. Access is tricky, but the brave are rewarded with more untouched wilderness, high densities of buffalo-hunting lions….in fact, high densities of game in general.

The last leg of the trip will take you to the fabulous shores of Lake Tanganyika: Mahale Mountains. A very remote and unique place to track chimpanzees. An extraordinary location of green mountains towering up into heavy clouds; falling into shades of white and turquoise. Chimpanzee cries echo around you as dhows sail peacefully ahead. A secret dappled haven. Fly back to either Kilimnjaro or Dar es Salaam after an incredible safari that will hopefully have shown you another story of Tanzania.

Next, explore another famous part of Laikipia, where you can sit above the original inspiration for Pride Rock on the Lewa-Borana Conservancy; home to 13% of Kenya’s rhino population. Horse-ride among giraffes and lions, search for cheetah and leopard from the comfort of your vehicle, nestled amongst the stunning purple rolling hills of Laikipia. Spend your time exploring this special place, staying at Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge, from which you can game drive, hike the stunning Chivilia Falls, arrange cultural visits and listen to the 400 different species of bird songs echo around you.

From there, you head towards Matopos (or Matobo Hills; depending on where you’re from), stopping en route to visit the impressive Great Zimbabwe. A mysterious medieval city located near Masvingo, for no one really knows who erected the gigantic edifices that form it. A fascinating afternoon spent learning about this relatively unknown part of Zimbabwe’s archeological and historical story. And then you make your way  to Amalinda Lodge, a superb property located in the stunning Matopos, with big granite boulders that glow pink as the day is born. Lush woodland, Stone Age rock art adorning the walls of the Nswatufi Cave, the incredible opportunity to track black and white rhino on foot, a natural infinity pool that will make you want to stay there forever…Amalinda and the Matobo Hills are very special indeed.

Next stop is Hwange National Park. A superb wildlife area, known for the quality of guiding, sightings and photographic potential. Explore the 60 or so waterholes that dot the park in search of wildlife, either on foot or in a vehicle. The Somalisa Concession, home to Somalisa Lodge, is a private safari area that will offer you the quiet remoteness and beauty of the bush. Lions and elephants are the superstars here, but cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs, buffalos, sable and roan antelopes and endless other species also call Hwange home.

It’s time to head to both Alice and Andrew’s favourite place in Africa – Mana Pools National Park, bordered by the mighty Zambezi River. Walking is king here, and nothing quite beats spending time on foot with Africa’s great animals. The elephants here have adapted to their landscape, and the big males have learned to balance on their hind legs reaching up for higher tree branches, bringing down leaves, fruit and sticks on which other elephants and grazers feed.

Finally, our Iconic Zimbabwe Odyssey ends with a visit to the thunderous Victoria Falls, the Mosi Oa Tunya. A sight so lovely must have made angels weep upon its sight, declared David Livingstone in his description of the Falls. Enjoy the exciting activities and stunning views of the ‘Smoke that Thunders’ during your time there. If you wish, you can see both sides of the Falls during your trip – it’s just a quick crossing over the Victoria Falls bridge, from which thrilling adventures can also take place. Victoria Falls is a vibrant and buzzing town – whilst you’re there, don’t forget to stop at Simba’s Artisan Bakery for yummy pastries and sourdough bread that would make the French pale with envy. After this memorable trip, fly from Victoria Falls Airport to your onward travel arrangements, hopefully smitten with the beautiful, complex, resilient and emotionally charged country that is Zimbabwe.
